Summary

Chafed by the "sivilized" restrictions of his foster home, and weary of his drunkard father's brutality, 14 year-old Huck Finn fakes his own death and sets off on a raft down the Mississippi River。 He is soon joined by Jim, an escaped slave。 Together, they experience a series of rollicking adventures that have amused readers, young and old, for over a century。 Their peaceful existence ends abruptly, however, with the appearance of the King and the Duke, an incorrigible pair of con artists who take over the raft。 After many difficulties, Huck and Jim escape their tormentors, and with the help of an imaginative rescue by Huck's old friend Tom Sawyer, Jim gains his freedom。

Again, Manga Classics outdid themselves with this one。 I wasn't really fond of the story of Huckleberry Finn when I was younger, but this edition was just so beautifully drawn, I loved it。 The story itself might be a bit difficult and wasn't my favorite, but it is definitly beautiful as a piece of art。 Again, Manga Classics outdid themselves with this one。 I wasn't really fond of the story of Huckleberry Finn when I was younger, but this edition was just so beautifully drawn, I loved it。 The story itself might be a bit difficult and wasn't my favorite, but it is definitly beautiful as a piece of art。 。。。more

I loved this book。 I’m currently reading all of the Manga Classics series and then once I finish the graphic novels, I go and read the actual classic。 I find it a lot easier to follow along that way, as it is easier to visualize and recognize scenes。

Another solid adaptation。 I read an edited/abridged version of the story as a kid, so although I knew the basic storyline, I had no exposure to the original language used in the book。 While it makes the book harder to get through (for multiple reasons), the social commentary and underlying themes revealed by the language is fascinating, and it was a good decision to preserve this aspect of the original in the adaptation。 Narrative flowed well。 Any confusion primarily originated from the vernacul Another solid adaptation。 I read an edited/abridged version of the story as a kid, so although I knew the basic storyline, I had no exposure to the original language used in the book。 While it makes the book harder to get through (for multiple reasons), the social commentary and underlying themes revealed by the language is fascinating, and it was a good decision to preserve this aspect of the original in the adaptation。 Narrative flowed well。 Any confusion primarily originated from the vernacular used by the main characters throughout --an attribute of the source material, so the adaptation shouldn't be faulted for that。 In fact, the illustrations were helpful in clarifying what was physically/emotionally going on, making it a little easier to understand what was being communicated。 。。。more

First of all, the fact that this, and the other Manga Classics books, exist is hilarious to me。 And the way Huck looks like a stereotypical manga bad boy is amazing。 That hair 😂 But seriously, the book was pretty good。 I don’t think I’d enjoy reading the actual book, but the manga version was nice。 The dialogue was tough to follow sometimes, but it was a pretty good story。 I get why it’s called a Great American Novel。

Generally speaking, I love comics, graphic novels, mangas etc etc。 I also love the concept of classics being adapted into such media because I think it is a funnier and more digestible way for the audience to be introduced to those stories。But I really didn't like this one for a number of reasons。Let's start by saying that the plot felt both complicated and tedious。 It felt like it dragged on forever and I couldn't connect to any of the characters。 Oh and the heavy usage of slang didn't help at Generally speaking, I love comics, graphic novels, mangas etc etc。 I also love the concept of classics being adapted into such media because I think it is a funnier and more digestible way for the audience to be introduced to those stories。But I really didn't like this one for a number of reasons。Let's start by saying that the plot felt both complicated and tedious。 It felt like it dragged on forever and I couldn't connect to any of the characters。 Oh and the heavy usage of slang didn't help at making much sense of what they were saying。And now, let's go to the "juicy" part。Even before reading this, I knew the original had been judged due to its heavy usage of the n word and I wanted to see how the creators would handle it。 The creators put a note before and after the story, stating that even though they are not racist or pro slavery, they didn't want change the n word because it would affect the story's originality and they wanted to keep it true to its time。And I get that, I do, but please explain to me why you censored some of the "bad" words from the original, as well as excluding Huck's smoking because you allegedly didn't want to encourage kids to do the same。 And you have no problem encouraging them to use racial slurs? Also, on a minor note, I didn't get why the scene where the King and the Duke were punished by being paraded in town while covered in tar and feathers was censored too, while we have seen much worse in other issues of the series (like in Manga Classics: Romeo and Juliet for example。)Anyway, even if the outdated terms and ideas were cut, I still would have had a hard time reading this, even though I still applaud the creators for their hard work。If you made it this far, congratulations!'Til next time, take care :) :) :)I received a free e-book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I think this is the first time that a Manga Classic adaptation has let me down。 I haven’t read the original work and honestly I don’t think Mark Twain’s writing style would be of my taste, so I decided to read the manga adaptation based on the impression I got from the cover。 Truth be told, I’ve got nothing but praise for the art style, because it is pleasing to the eye and at moments, it turns a heavy, boring scene into something more entertaining and easy to follow。 The character design and th I think this is the first time that a Manga Classic adaptation has let me down。 I haven’t read the original work and honestly I don’t think Mark Twain’s writing style would be of my taste, so I decided to read the manga adaptation based on the impression I got from the cover。 Truth be told, I’ve got nothing but praise for the art style, because it is pleasing to the eye and at moments, it turns a heavy, boring scene into something more entertaining and easy to follow。 The character design and the ambience are an excellent combo and I truly want to keep reading these series。Unfortunately, the story by itself isn’t going to be a life-changing book for me。 But let me tell you a little bit about Huckleberry Finn: he is a young man that goes into several adventures along with a slave called Jim。 Throughout the volume we see the young man as an opportunist and though he doesn’t mean any harm, it was a bit hard to feel empathic towards his case。 I think that what stopped me from enjoying this adaptation is the fact that they tried to keep the slang a bunch of characters used, when it could easily have been toned down a little so it would be more understandable for bilingual readers like me。 Instead it came off as annoying –I even had to stop myself a couple of times to re-read several dialogues that made no sense to me。 Also, I know this was written a long ago, but I still get mad when white folks use the N-word to talk about black people。 Thus, the only good thing I have left to say is that Jim was really a good friend to Huck, even when he didn’t deserve it。 I guess I’m just tired of seeing white people get away with everything they do。 I would only recommend this book to someone that has read and liked the original work。 I’m giving this 2/5 because the art work is really good, but the story is so boring and tedious, I wouldn’t read it even if someone payed me to do it。 I received an e-book copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。PREVIOUS REVIEWS FROM THE MANGA CLASSICS COLLECTION:Great Expectations | Jane Eyre | The Count of Monte Cristo 。。。more

Reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn In Manga form was difficult。 I understand the need to keep the story intact, however, having a story from such an ugly point in history coupled with the beautiful illustrations seemed counterintuitive。 There was a need to downplay some of the harsh imagery, but not the coarse and ugly words? What I like about it, as with any of the Manga Classics, is the illustrations。 They are very emotive and, when appropriate, hilarious。

Many thanks to Udon Entertainment and Netgalley for providing an e-ARC of this title for review。Another nicely done adaptation from Manga Classics。 The art style is befitting for the characters。 There is a lot of charm in the rendering of Huck, Jim, and Tom。 I did find Huck’s shadeless eyes a bit odd though。 The direction and flow of the panels is well done and kept me into the story。 There are certain dramatic and emotional moments that are conveyed well and in fitting somber ways, while the li Many thanks to Udon Entertainment and Netgalley for providing an e-ARC of this title for review。Another nicely done adaptation from Manga Classics。 The art style is befitting for the characters。 There is a lot of charm in the rendering of Huck, Jim, and Tom。 I did find Huck’s shadeless eyes a bit odd though。 The direction and flow of the panels is well done and kept me into the story。 There are certain dramatic and emotional moments that are conveyed well and in fitting somber ways, while the light comedic moments are also well handled and fitting to manga stylization。There are a number of end notes from the staff that go well in explaining their methods of adaptation and how they approached certain scenes。 At almost 400 pages and almost 40 chapters, they took great care in trying to keep a great deal of the story intact。 The language utilized is, as customary for Manga Classics, purely faithful to the subject matter。 I did grapple at times with the speech patterns of some characters and the addition of artwork assists with the context。Overall I enjoyed this one but on a subjective level, there are classics that I feel are more outstanding and show off the skill of Manga Classics adaptation abilities more readily。 The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables still stand out as my favorites。 But for pre-existing fans of Huckleberry Finn who may have some nostalgia for the work, you wouldn’t be steering wrong in checking this out。Overall Rating – 8。5/10Why You Should Check It Out – A charming adaptation of the original story that does well in conveying the seriousness and the humor of its source material in appropriate measure。 Character designs are well thought out and match the characters, especially the main characters, nicely。Why You Might Not Like It – There are other adaptations by Manga Classics that are more enthralling choices。 If you’re not a fan of Huck Finn, this adaptation probably won’t change your mind。 。。。more
